This Controller role oversees the full accounting function across corporate, development, project, and property entities within a real estate development environment. The position involves leading a team of three while remaining hands-on with core accounting activities including financial statements, tax compliance, project accounting, cash flow projections, and investor reporting. This is a senior role suited to a technically strong, detail-oriented professional comfortable working in a fast-moving entrepreneurial setting.

What you will be doing

  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements across multiple entities and ensure accurate reporting for management, investors, and lenders
  • Manage project and property accounting including cost tracking, budgets, capital expenditures, and coordination with development and asset management teams
  • Prepare and maintain cash flow projections, monitor liquidity and funding requirements, and support financing activities and lender compliance
  • Oversee tax filings and compliance requirements, coordinate with external advisors on tax planning and strategy, and manage regulatory audits
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes while improving workflows and financial controls
  • Lead and mentor a team of three accounting staff, set expectations, review work, and remain actively involved in execution
  • Oversee accounting systems and improve reporting processes, controls, documentation, and workflows to support scalability

What the role requires

  • CPA designation required
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience with strong technical accounting knowledge
  • Experience preparing financial statements, managing full-cycle accounting, and overseeing HST filings, payroll, and cash flow reporting
  • Experience managing a small accounting team in a hands-on capacity
  • Real estate, development, construction, or property accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Audit experience and prior Big 4 accounting firm background strongly preferred
